    Code on Intact Stability 2008, 2020 Edition (IS Code)

    The International Code on Intact Stability, 2008 (2008 IS Code) presents mandatory and recommendatory stability criteria and other measures for ensuring the safe operation of ships, to minimize the risk to such ships, to the personnel on board and to the environment.

    The 2020 Edition features:

    • an update of the 2008 IS Code, including all amendments that will have entered into force on 1 January 2020;
    • minor additions and amendments to the mandatory part A of the Code;
    • amendments to the Code’s recommendatory part B, including substantial additions to chapter 2 on Recommended design criteria for certain types of ships and chapter 3 on Guidance in preparing stability information, as well as the provision of a new annex 3;
    • criteria based on the best state-of-the-art concepts available at the time they were developed; and influences on intact stability, as contained in the previous edition; and
    • Explanatory Notes and the Unified Interpretations to the 2008 IS Code.


    This publication should be of interest to maritime administrations, ship manufacturers, shipping companies, education institutes and others concerned with intact stability criteria.

    IMO E-reader (EBK)

If you don't already have this software installed on your computer, it can be downloaded free of charge here:www.imo.org/en/Publications/Pages/Bookshelf.aspx. You may print 10% of the text (approx. a chapter) at a time from a single title with a maximum of 75 pages per day across all titles (not pdf).

    An important feature of the IMO Bookshelf e-reader software enables users to uninstall a license from one computer and reinstall it on another computer. Important: You must uninstall the license from the old computer before attempting to reinstall it on another machine! Please find step by step instructions here.

    An IMO Publishing e-reader is fully bookmarked, indexed and presented in an ebk file format which is viewed using the free software "The IMO Bookshelf". The e-reader is a replica of the printed title. E-readers are available for major titles in English with some in French and Spanish.

    Electronic copies of older IMO publications are available as an e-book in PDF format.

    From 1 January 2022, IMO will be moving to a new, hybrid version of the IMO Bookshelf, which will enable browser-based access to IMO publications.

    Numerous advantages of the new version include:

    • No installation required

    • Access using multiple devices including tablets and MACs

    • Use online and offline

    Support for the existing Windows-based version of the IMO Bookshelf will continue until 30 June 2023, but no new purchases in this format can be made after 1 January 2022. Users will be migrated to the new service, and all new IMO publications will be made available only on the new version of the IMO Bookshelf. Further details will be available on our online shop in due course.
